: Background of WYPS
Where WYPS came from...

 The World Youth Peace Summit is part of a larger framework of International movements that began with the Millennium World Peace Summit in August, 2000. This summit featured religious and spiritual leaders from around the globe and was held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Opening the Summit, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said ‘this summit… is without doubt one of the most inspiring gathering ever held here.’

The Millennium World Peace Summit led to the historic creation of the World Council of Religious Leaders, which first met in Bangkok in June 2002. It was at this meeting that a youth delegation introduced the concept of the World Youth Peace Summit. Later that year, at the Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders in Geneva, the first planning meetings were held of the World Youth Peace Summit.
